Lobos Isle natural Park
Lobos Isle Natural Park
At one time (15th c.) Lobos Isle was considered amazing because of the size of the colony of Mediterranean Monk Seals (Monachus monachus) that lived there. None remain today, however Lobo Isle is still home to around 130 species of plants and a variety of animals that need to be protected and preserved to avoid history repeating itself. A small islet (around 5 square kilometres), Lobos Isle is situated some 2 km northeast of Fuerteventura, separated by a stretch of water no deeper than 10 m called El Río, in the Bocaina Straits. The isle is clearly visible from Corralejo. Its coastline is dotted with waterlogged areas that form salt marshes of extreme biological importance, where several species of birds come to nest on the cliff faces of La Caldera Mountain, particularly Herring gulls and Cory shearwaters. The beautiful seabed surrounding the isle, which has been declared a Submarine Natural Reserve, contains great ecological wealth.

Corralejo
Corralejo
Corralejo Natural Park lies in the northern part of the island and is made up of a large area of dunes, a solidified lava stream, and the Montaña Roja (Red Mountain) volcanic cone. Its considerable sandy habitat contains plant species such as the Canarian Bean-Caper (Zygophyllum fontanesii), Shrubby Sea-blite (Suaeda vera) and a member of the amaranthus family (Traganum moquinii). It also has the largest colony of Houbara Bustards (Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae) on the island.

Fuerteventura Flora

Fuerteventura Flora
Palm trees and salt-cedars, almost the only local trees on the island, are located in the ravine courses, valleys and, particularly, the borders of old gavias: farming terraces that optimise the use of the ground and water, minimising the loss of this extremely scarce resource. Shrubs are found equally on north facing and south facing slopes, indicating the great capacity of these plants to adapt to the island’s climate. Apart from gorses, there are also more limited communities of spurge, which is found mostly on the peaks of medium altitude, both on humid and sunny slopes, though with preference for the latter.

In the salt marshes the prevailing vegetation comprises shrubs of the family Chenopodiaceae, such as Samphires, Alkali Sea-Blite, Shrubby Sea-Blite, Wild Beet, Saltbushes, Marine Thyme, Canarian Bean-Caper, etc. The special ground conditions in the salt marshes lead to the appearance of a specific vegetation consisting of halophytes.
Fuerteventura Fauna

Fuerteventura Fauna
Fuerteventura contains some of the best bird life in the Canary Islands, with a number of import nesting (many endemic) and migratory species. The virgin coasts of Fuerteventura serve as a “stop-off point” for these species, with the components of the colonies varying depending on the season. As regards marine birds, the most important are the Cory Shearwater, in terms of nesting birds, whilst migratory species include the European Sandpiper, the Grey Plover and the Heron.

The abundant caves in the area of La Arena lava stream, as well as Lobos Isle, make ideal nesting grounds for the European Sandpiper, a marine species that can only be seen during its nesting season, from April to September.
The Majorero goat

The Majorero Goat
In Fuerteventura there are as many goats as there are people. The Majorero or Fuerteventura goat is the result of their adaptability to the weather conditions and the aridness of the land combined with the patient husbandry of generations of goatherds to produce an extremely resistant and productive strain. During centuries goat farming was the island’s main means of living; in fact, in the narrations of their expeditions along the western Atlantic coastline, the classic adventurers always referred to Fuerteventura as the Island of Goats.
